Annual Requiem at St. Patrick’s Cathedral Commemorates Ukraine’s Holodomor

New York, NY (UCCA) - On Saturday, November 21, 2015, hundreds of Ukrainians, friends and supporters gathered at Manhattan’s iconic St. Patrick’s Cathedral for an ecumenical requiem service and commemorative program dedicated to the memory of Ukraine’s Holodomor, Stalin's Famine Genocide of 7-10 million Ukrainians in 1932-33. As co-organized by the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA), the largest representation of Ukrainians in America, this annual commemoration regularly attracts hundreds of attendees from across the tri-state metropolitan area, and this year was no exception. Even following the massive gathering in Washington, DC on November 7, when the National Ukrainian Genocide Memorial was dedicated in the presence of several thousand people, this year’s annual program at St. Patrick’s Cathedral still drew buses from communities in Hartford, CT, Whippany, NJ, as well as hundreds of others solemn churchgoers.

New York, NY (UCCA) -- For a land with centuries of tradition, November 21st is only a recent commemorative date in Ukraine’s history. On this Day of Dignity and Freedom, the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America joins our brethren across the world in celebrating the indomitable Ukrainian spirit which manifested itself in the growth of European identity among the Ukrainian electorate during the historic 2004 Orange Revolution, and the defense of these democratic values, rights and freedoms for which the Ukrainian people “laid body and soul” during the 2013-2014 Revolution of Dignity.

New York, NY (UCCA) -- The Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA), the nation’s largest representation of Americans of Ukrainian descent, affirms that although Ukraine’s nation-wide elections of more than 10,000 mayoral positions and 160,000 members of municipal councils on October 25th were marred by some incidents, the voting process by and large was conducted in a transparent and democratic manner, complied with Ukrainian law and met international election standards. With more than 130 parties fielding candidates, the voter turnout in the local elections was between 46 and 47 percent, nearly equaling the 52% turnout in the 2014 parliamentary elections. Complete results are expected to be released on November 4.

New York, NY (UCCA) – On Sunday, October 25, Ukrainians will head to the polls to elect more than 10,000 mayors and 160,000 regional council lawmakers in local elections across the largest country in Europe. The Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA), the nation’s largest representation of Americans of Ukrainian descent, has registered 72 volunteer election observers who will travel to 9 regions of the country for several days of demanding but incredibly rewarding work. As the only Ukrainian American community organization registered with Ukraine’s Central Election Commission (CEC), the UCCA has organized an Election Observation Mission (EOM) for every presidential and parliamentary election in Ukraine in its 24 years of independence, including Ukraine’s very first democratic elections in 1991, as well as the largest EOM ever registered by Ukraine’s CEC, with over 2400 observers in 2004.
