UCCA Appalled by Russian Terrorist Act Against Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17

The Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA), the representative organization of over one million Americans of Ukrainian descent, expresses its deepest condolences to the families and love ones of the innocent victims of Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17.

The commercial Boeing 777 was flying over Eastern Ukraine yesterday when it was shot down by a surface-to-air missile fired by pro-Russian terrorists. The plane exploded in midair, killing everyone on board. This heinous act perpetrated by the Russian-sponsored terrorists in Eastern Ukraine has resulted in the deaths of 298 innocent victims, including at least one confirmed American citizen. The UCCA is outraged at this aggressive behavior and strongly condemns the Putin-backed terrorists for this egregious crime.  We urge world leaders to act responsibly and bring the perpetrators to justice.

OPEN LETTER TO PRESIDENT OBAMA

The Ukrainain Congress Committee of America issued the following Open Letter to President Obama on June 3rd.

Dear Mr. President!

The Ukrainian Congress Committee of America, the representative organization of over one million Americans of Ukrainian descent, welcomes your decision to meet with the newly-elected President of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko during your trip to Poland to mark the 25th anniversary of Poland’s first post-communist elections.

This meeting between you, Mr. President, and Ukraine’s President-elect is critical to the future of peace in the region, as U.S support for Ukraine now is imperative to its survival. Russia’s unrelenting aggressive behavior vis-à-vis Ukraine is dangerously destabilizing the international legal system. The massive build-up of Russian troops along Ukraine’s eastern border and escalating provocations by Russian sponsored groups within Ukraine, specifically in the Eastern regions of Luhansk and Donetsk, are threatening Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. The U.S. must take definitive action to help stabilize the transnational, trans-Atlantic security framework, which clearly serves our national interests as Americans, or the crisis in Ukraine is likely to escalate.

As the bastion of democracy in the free world, the United States must take the lead in promoting international norms and consolidating geo-political stability.  Therefore, the UCCA urges you, Mr. President, to affirm the United States’ commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity during your meeting with President-elect Poroshenko by:

  • Condemning Russia's invasion of sovereign Ukrainian territory and its continued use of aggression, intimidation and provocation, and calling for the immediate cessation of Russian hostility towards Ukraine;
  • Supporting Ukraine's full integration into Western structures by accelerating Ukraine's ascension into NATO and the European Union;
  • Holding immediate joint NATO exercises in Ukraine and continuing exercises in NATO ally countries such as Poland and the Baltic States;
  • Providing Ukraine with Major Non-NATO Ally Status, thus conferring a variety of military and financial advantages and privileges that are otherwise not available to non-NATO countries, including the delivery of vital weapons;
  • Bolstering U.S. financial support for Ukraine by supporting a 21st century Marshall Plan aimed at stabilizing and strengthening trans-Atlantic and regional security.
  • Supporting a major OSCE and UN peacekeeping mission (both civilian and military) to Eastern Ukraine to monitor the situation on the ground and deter provocations that may lead to further Russian intervention;
  • Extending immediate NATO Membership Action Plan (MAP) to Georgia and other countries in the region to solidify EuroAtlantic structures; and,
  • Expanding economic sanctions to include not only individuals within Putin’s inner circle, but major sectors of Russia’s economy.

The UCCA hopes that your meeting with President-elect Poroshenko will affirm the steadfast commitment of the United States to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In wishing you Godspeed, we remain,

Sincerely yours,

Tamara Olexy                                                                                      Marie Duplak

REQUEST THE WHITE HOUSE

TO INVITE PRESIDENT POROSHENKO

Ukraine successfully elected its newest president on May 25, 2014.  International monitoring organizations reported that the vote was free, fair, and transparent.  It was a stunning victory for democracy, the Ukrainian nation, and a death-nail in the coffin for Russia’s propaganda war against Ukraine.  The monumental task, however, of rebuilding Ukraine looms large for Ukraine and its newly-elected President Petro Poroshenko.
