UCCA Statements
19 April 2012
The Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA), the representative organization of over one million Americans of Ukrainian descent, is deeply troubled by the April 12th conviction of former Acting Defense Minister Valery Ivashchenko. Mr. Ivashchenko was sentenced to 5 years imprisonment on charges related to abuse of office, making him the third minister from opposition leader and former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko’s cabinet to be convicted and jailed. This most recent politically motivated act on the part of the Yanukovich regime is yet another example of the ongoing political repressions in Ukraine.
The UCCA strongly condemns the recent sentencing and imprisonment of Valery Ivashchenko, and calls for his immediate release, especially given his poor state of health after an 18 month pre-trial imprisonment; and urges the government of Ukraine to respect the rule of law and provide for a fair judicial process.
The UCCA welcomes the United States’ public condemnation of this most recent act of selective justice targeted at Ukraine’s political opposition; and encourages them to continue their principled position in protecting human rights in Ukraine.
