Washington, DC (UNIS) - Registration for the annual “Ukrainian Days” advocacy program in our nation’s capital is still open.  Sponsored by the Ukrainian National Information Service (UNIS), the Washington public-affairs bureau of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA), the advocacy event will be held in Washington, DC on Wednesday and Thursday, April 25-26, 2012.  The intent of “Ukrainian Days” is to promote the concerns of the Ukrainian American community, as well as to establish better relations with Administration officials, think-tank organizations, and our elected representatives in Congress.

UCCA ACTION ITEM - Say No! to the Stalin Memorial

The UCCA expressed its outrage back in December 2009, upon hearing the plans to install a bust of Soviet dictator Josef Stalin at the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, Virginia. [A copy of our letter can be found on the UCCA website at www.ucca.org]. However, despite protests from the UCCA, various ethnic organizations and veterans, the National D-Day Memorial Foundation went ahead with plans to place a bust at the memorial, just in time for the 66th anniversary of the World War II invasion of Normandy.

Advocate Membership in the Congressional Ukrainian Caucus

The Congressional Ukrainian Caucus (CUC) has been an important tool in our community's work with the United States Congress.  In our decade-long cooperation with this bi-partisan group of Members of Congress, the community is able to promote Ukraine-related issues of concern and advocate legislation that advances U.S.-Ukraine bilateral relations.  In past years, with the Caucus' assistance, the Ukrainian community has achieved numerous accomplishments, in particular passage of a bill to construct a memorial to the victims of Ukrainian Famine-Genocide, as well as a bill to 'graduate' Ukraine from the Jackson-Vanik amendment.

Advocate for President Obama to Visit Ukraine

The Ukrainian American community watched with profound interest President Obama’s first European trip in April 2009.  During that time, the White House indicated the possibility of President Obama traveling to Moscow to meet his Russian counterpart, Dmitri Medvedyev.  It is now apparent that in July 2009 the President’s agenda includes trips to Russia and Italy for a meeting of the G-8 leaders.
