LATEST RUSSIAN ATTACKS IN UKRAINE LEAVE THOUSANDS OF CHILDREN IN THE COLD

Друк PDF

New York, NY (UCCA) – According to the United States Mission to the OSCE, the number of ceasefire violations over the past 48 hours in and around the Ukrainian town of Avdiivka is now “uncountable, with explosions surpassing 2,300.” Seven Ukrainian soldiers have been killed defending their homeland and dozens more have been wounded. Damage from this recent bombardment has stranded 17,000 people in Avdiivka without water, electricity, or heat in freezing conditions; a conservative estimate lists 2,500 of these individuals as children. Up to 400,000 individuals in the surrounding area are also at risk of hypothermia with temperatures dropping to lows of - 4° F overnight.

The Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA), the nation’s largest representative body of Americans of Ukrainian descent, calls upon the United States and the international community to voice their strong condemnation of such attacks and immediately increase pressure on Russia in order to prevent the renewal of full-scale hostilities in Donbas. The use of “Grad” multiple rocket systems, artillery of 152 mm and 122 mm, mortars of 120 and 82 mm, are all prohibited by the Minsk agreements and this violation warrants the strengthening of targeted economic sanctions against the Russian Federation until they fully comply with their international obligations. All covert and overt Russian forces and equipment must be removed from Ukraine, including a withdrawal of any territorial claim over the Crimean peninsula.

UCCA URGES CONTINUED U.S. SUPPORT OF UKRAINE

New York, NY (UCCA) – The Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA), the nation’s largest representative body of Americans of Ukrainian descent, has consistently advocated for Ukraine’s freedom and independence over the course of three-quarters of a century. As a united voice for our community, we have stood behind national policies designed to “make America strong in power” and “resolute in its foreign relations” (Address of the First Ukrainian American Congress, May 24, 1940), have repeatedly called upon the United States to live up to its obligations to Ukraine as a signator of the Budapest Memorandum, and have forthrightly advocated for maintaining and strengthening the existing sanctions regime against the Russian Federation until the withdrawal of all covert and overt Russian forces and equipment from Ukraine. Therefore, when a senior adviser to President Trump suggests in a televised interview that lifting U.S. sanctions on Russia is "under consideration" by the United States, we believe it is incumbent on the President and our elected officials to come out and correct the record.

Out of the 193 member states of the United Nations, 70 voted in favor, 26 voted against and 77 abstained.

WE DON’T NEED ANOTHER RESET

Друк PDF

New York (UCCA) – Almost three years after Russia’s military invasion and illegal occupation of Ukrainian territory - not a one-time violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty, but an ongoing, daily violation of international law - the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA), the nation’s largest representation of Ukrainians in America, calls on the incoming 115th United States Congress and President-elect Donald Trump’s incoming administration to continue our nation’s proud tradition of bipartisan support for Ukraine. Any retreat from current sanctions levied against Russia or the military, political and economic support of Ukraine, and the United States would signal yet another “reset,” a capitulation with terrifying consequences for Ukraine, our European partners and security around the world.
