UWC May Appeal 2013

The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) is the international coordinating body for Ukrainian communities in the diaspora representing the interests of over 20 million Ukrainians.

For over 45 years, the UWC has been actively supporting the development of communities around the world while protecting their right to preserve the Ukrainian identity through the promotion of heritage, culture and language.

Our identity, rooted in national values, also inextricably binds us with Ukrainians in Ukraine.

While our communities in the diaspora continue to develop, Ukraine finds itself at a crossroads, even after 21 years of independence. The UWC firmly believes that Ukraine, with its intrinsic European character, belongs in Europe where it could prosper as an independent and democratic state. For this reason, the UWC is making a concerted effort to inform the international community of the benefits of Ukraine’s Euro‑integration for both Europe and Ukraine. The signing of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement later this year in November would herald a new era in the history of Ukraine.

As Ukrainians around the world mark the 80th anniversary of the Holodomor in 2013, we pay tribute to the memory of the millions of victims of this genocide and we resolve to raise the level of consciousness concerning the Holodomor. As of today, the Holodomor has been recognized by 16 countries as an act of genocide of the Ukrainian people. This recognition testifies to our determination to succeed in a common purpose.

The X World Congress of Ukrainians will take place from 20-22 August 2013 in Lviv, Ukraine. Delegates representing Ukrainian communities from around the world will meet to discuss the successes and challenges of community development, and current issues facing the Ukrainian people, including Ukraine’s accession into the European Union and the further enhancement of the global Ukrainian vision. Ukrainians from Ukraine will have the opportunity to join Ukrainians from the diaspora in a dialogue on national interests and binding values.

The UWC has member organizations in 33 countries and ties with Ukrainians in 14 additional countries. Throughout its history, the UWC has successfully protected the core values in which we believe.

The UWC has chosen as its motto for 2013 the words of renowned Ukrainian poet Lesia Ukrainka –Contra spem spero (Hope against all odds). Together, no challenge is insurmountable. Together, we will address the challenges and build a stronger global community. Our continued success depends on your generosity and ongoing financial support.
