Washington, DC (UNIS) – As mentioned in a February 9, 2009 UNIS News Release, “Ukrainian Days” will be held in Washington, DC on March 25-26, 2009. The intent of “Ukrainian Days” is to promote the concerns of the Ukrainian American community, as well as to establish better relations with our elected representatives in Congress. During the two day event, participants of “Ukrainian Days” will meet with their respective members of the House of Representatives and Senate in order to communicate to them issues that concern the Ukrainian American community and establish closer communications with their offices. On Wednesday morning, March 25th, UNIS will organize a briefing session at 10:30am at the Heritage Foundation by U.S. government officials from the State Department (invited)Ukrainian Days” by the Ukrainian National Information Service (UNIS).  and non-governmental organizations (NGO’s) including the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation (VOCMF). Of particular interest will be a discussion about the topics of concern to the community, including: increased U.S. foreign assistance to Ukraine; energy security for Ukraine; NATO enlargement; continued advocacy of the Ukrainian Genocide of 1932-1933; as well as, the overall context of U.S.-Ukrainian relations. Briefing papers will be supplied to all the participants of “Ukrainian Days".

 

 

Later that evening, the “Ukrainian Days” participants are invited to a congressional reception in the U.S. Senate hosted by the Central and East European Coalition (CEEC). The reception will be in celebration of the 10th and 5th anniversaries, respectively, of the first two rounds of NATO enlargement, as well as a policy dialogue regarding the upcoming NATO Summit and the alliance’s 60th anniversary. Invited speakers and guests include U.S. government officials, former Secretaries of State, and Members of Congress.

Thursday morning, March 26th, participants of “Ukrainian Days” will partake in a breakfast meeting in the Rayburn House Office Building with members of the Congressional Ukrainian Caucus (CUC), an officially registered group within the U.S. House of Representatives that is interested in enhancing relations between Ukraine and the United States. In the evening of March 26th, a reception will be held at the Embassy of Ukraine, where “Ukrainian Days” participantswill have a chance to acquaint themselves with the Ukrainian diplomats and discuss their ideas regarding U.S.-Ukrainian relations.

A “Ukrainian Days” registration fee of $75 will cover expenses associated with the event.
