STATE VISIT FOR PRESIDENT OF UKRAINE

REQUEST THE WHITE HOUSE

TO INVITE PRESIDENT POROSHENKO

Ukraine successfully elected its newest president on May 25, 2014.  International monitoring organizations reported that the vote was free, fair, and transparent.  It was a stunning victory for democracy, the Ukrainian nation, and a death-nail in the coffin for Russia’s propaganda war against Ukraine.  The monumental task, however, of rebuilding Ukraine looms large for Ukraine and its newly-elected President Petro Poroshenko.

ACTION ITEM - URGE PRESIDENT OBAMA TO VISIT UKRAINE

Print PDF

Following the illegitimate “referendum” in Crimea, Ukraine over the weekend, the Obama Administration acted quickly to enforce visa restrictions and asset freezes of Russian government officials for their involvement in the Crimean invasion.  President Obama also mentioned that Vice President Biden is traveling to Europe to meet our European allies, while the President will travel to The Hague next week to participate in the Nuclear Security Summit.

The Ukrainian National Information Service (UNIS) recommends that while President Obama is in Europe he visit Ukraine to show support for its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence. Requests may be e-mailed directly through the White House website at:   http://www.whitehouse.gov/contact/submit-questions-and-comments

The President

The White House

Washington, D.C. 20500

Dear Mr. President:

The invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces and the so-called “referendum” in Crimea goes against all international principles, norms, and covenants. As one of the guarantors of Ukraine’s independence and territorial integrity per the Budapest Memorandum of 1994, the United States must stand with the people of Ukraine as that country defends its independence from foreign aggressors.

Mr. President, while you are in Europe to attend the Nuclear Security Summit I urge you to travel to Ukraine to support that country’s sovereignty.  Your presence would strengthen and solidify Ukraine’s transformation from a kleptocracy to a government representative of all its citizens.

Sincerely,

Please write to your representatives in Congress today!

February 28, 2014

The Honorable (name)

United States Senate/U.S. House of Representatives

Washington, DC 20510/20515

Dear Senator/Congressman (name):

UCCA [BRANCH NAME] respectfully appeals to you to call on President Obama to intervene with President Putin and urge him to stand-down in Crimea, to recall all Russian troops back to the Russian naval base and those troops that have been transported to Crimea directly from Russia, to leave Ukrainian sovereign territory and return to Russia. We also respectfully request that the U.S. Congress condemn these latest dangerous provocations by Russia against the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine.

It is now confirmed that Russian troops have entered Crimea (see report below). It also has been confirmed to the National Office of UCCA by the Embassy of Ukraine in Washington, D.C. that Russian troop transport planes have landed at Crimean airports, (Ukrainian airports that have been taken over by Russian personnel), and that troops are disembarking from the transport planes. It also has been confirmed by the Ukrainian Embassy that the Ukrainian permanent representative to the United Nations has asked for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council this afternoon!

The situation is critical and time is of the essence.

Thank you for your assistance in this matter of utmost urgency!

Sincerely,

Below please find a sample letter, which the UCCA asks you to send to your Senator and Congressman urging them to express your concern to the President and the Secretary of State and implement sanctions against the corrupt Yanukovych regime.

SAMPLE LETTER

Dear Senator/Representative,

As your constituent, I urge you to contact Administration officials (The White House and the U.S. Department of State) to support targeted sanctions, including visa bans and asset freezes against Viktor Yanukovych, his government and all those individuals responsible for ordering or carrying out violence against the peaceful demonstrators gathered in Kyiv’s Euromaidan who are fighting for their basic human and civil rights.

The people of Ukraine urgently request your support in their deadly struggle against the repressive regime of Viktor Yanukovych. Without the full support of the United States in the form of sanctions, the people will continue to die at the hands of terrorist-tyrants who currently cling to power in Ukraine.

Sincerely,
