ATTEND Special “Ukrainian Day” in Washington - Wednesday, February 5, 2013

With the overwhelming surge of Ukrainian American interest in the latest developments in Ukraine, the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA) and its Washington public relations bureau, the Ukrainian National Information Service (UNIS), in coordination with other Ukrainian American organziations, will hold a special “Ukrainian Day” event on Wednesday, February 5, 2014 to garner support for Ukraine’s civic democratic movement in Ukraine and advocate for targeted sanctions against Ukrainian government officials.

This event is of utmost importance this year.  Given the success of previous “Ukrainian Days” in Washington, this year’s special advocacy event will afford community representatives to meet officials in the U.S. Congress and Administration that form U.S.-Ukrainian politics to discuss U.S. foreign policy strategy with regard to the dramatic surge of civic activism in Ukraine since November 21, 2013.   It is critical that our community demonstrate its active interest and involvement in this matter.

Below, please find a sample letter to your Member of Congress requesting a constituent meeting.  Letters may be e-mailed directly by using the Senate or House website at: http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm or http://www.house.gov/representatives/.   Please find your elected officials and simply fill in the form and include the text in the “Comments” section.  Should you have any questions, please contact the UNIS office at (202) 547-0018 or at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. The Honorable (Name)

United States Senate / U.S. House of Representatives

Washington, D.C. 20510/20515

Dear Senator / Representative (Name):

I have been closely following the dramatic civic developments in Ukraine since November 2013. The world has been impressed by the courage and resilience of the Ukrainian people, who are protesting the corrupt regime of President Yanukovych and are standing up for their dignity as a nation solidly ensconced in European values.

As your constituent, I am deeply concerned about Russia's attempts to re-colonize Ukraine and the continued use of violence to intimidate media outfits, civic leaders, and to quell peaceful protestors in Kyiv’s EuroMaidan. I appeal to you to support targeted sanctions against Ukrainian government officials for their corrupt practices and against Russian officials who are working to destroy Ukrainian sovereignty. Your support of this matter is imperative to prevent future violence in Ukraine! I will be in Washington on Wednesday, February 5th to discuss this very important topic regarding U.S. security interests in Central Europe. I look forward to your positive response.

Sincerely,

• SUPPORT RESOLUTION FOR UKRAINE–TARGETED SANCTIONS!

Members of Congress have responded to the crisis in Ukraine with great support.  Sens. McCain and Murphy visited Ukraine this past weekend and appeared on the EuroMaidan.  The Senate has introduced a resolution calling for a peaceful outcome to the crisis and targeted sanctions against officials should violence befall the EuroMaidan.  Similarly, the House of Representatives introduced its resolution calling for the same measures.

Support is necessary to defend the civil liberties of the protestors and condemn any attempt to forcefully break-up the EuroMaidan.  The Ukrainian National Information Service (UNIS) requests all Ukrainian Americans to contact their Members of Congress and urge them to co-sponsor the resolutions.

Attached, please find a sample letter to Members of Congress.  Letters may be e-mailed directly by using the Senate or House website at: http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm or http://www.house.gov/representatives/.   Please find your elected officials and simply fill in the form and text in the “Comments” section.  Should you have any questions, please contact the UNIS office at (202) 547-0018 or at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Mr President!

Today, the people of Ukraine are standing up for freedom and democracy, despite threats of and actual acts of violence directed against them. Russia's Vladimir Putin is stoking this violence in order to subjugate Ukraine once more and incorporate it into the Russian empire. Viktor Yanukovych is ordering this violence in order to maintain his tenacious hold on power and his stolen wealth. Let both of them know, in no uncertain terms, that they and their cronies will pay the price for this brutality. The world has long looked to America for leadership. Mr. President, lead the way. Stand up for freedom and democracy!
