Dear Members and Friends:

Following the results of the U.S. elections on November 8, the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America asks its members and supporters to aid in our continuing efforts in maintaining bipartisan support for Ukraine with our elected officials both in the final weeks of this legislative cycle as well as the coming year. As we continue to keep you abreast of our communications with Congress and the new White House administration, we ask that you review our attached statement detailing the goals we will seek to help enact with the country's new leadership as well as after significant turnover in top Congressional posts next year.

As we are all too aware, the work of Ukrainians in America and our many organizations is needed more now by our family and friends in Ukraine than in recent memory, given Russia’s latest efforts to enslave Ukraine. Only by continuing to strengthen and add to our coalition, will victory come in the form of a Ukraine, whole and free.

25 Years of Independence

Print PDF

New York, NY (UCCA) – August 24, 2016 will mark 25 years since the people of Ukraine proclaimed an end to centuries of bondage, and resolutely vowed to protect their new democracy, while charting a future course towards closer European integration. Sadly, this historic anniversary is overshadowed by the knowledge that for the past 2 years the people of Ukraine have been fighting to defend their nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity from military, economic, cyber and information warfare – or hybrid war - by Vladimir Putin’s Russia. Just last month, Ukraine recorded the highest number of civilian casualties from Russian attacks in over a year, twice that of the previous month.

New York, NY (UCCA) – The Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA), the nation’s largest representation of over 1,000,000 Ukrainians in America, continually monitors positions and statements made throughout every election cycle concerning U.S. foreign policy and the continuing war being waged against Ukraine by Putin’s Russia. Over the past several months, UCCA representatives have reached out as in years past to both the Republican and the Democratic National Committees in advance of an historic election this November. Additionally, since August of 2015, members of the UCCA Executive Board have communicated directly with the campaigns of several presidential candidates from both major parties, on behalf of the Ukrainian American community and its desire to aid the Ukrainian nation, in accordance with the stated mission of the UCCA.

#SUPPORT UKRAINE!

Print PDF

Earlier this year, the Ukrainian National Information Service (UNIS), the Washington DC public affairs bureau of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA), initiated the #SUPPORT UKRAINE! campaign to bring more attention to the situation in Ukraine, the plight of Ukrainians enduring the ravages of war in eastern Ukraine, and those who are under constant brutal measures in Russia-occupied Crimea. #SUPPORT UKRAINE! activities included “Ukrainian Days” advocacy events, rallies in front of the White House, and outreach to the mass media.  Joining us have been other Central and East European communities who clearly understand that if left unchecked, acts of Russian aggression will drastically effect world security and re-draw the current map of Europe.  Ukraine's independence and territorial integrity are paramount to geo-political stability worldwide.

The U.S. Congress is out of session for the traditional August recess.  #SUPPORT UKRAINE! campaign is calling upon all Ukrainian community representatives to meet with their Members of Congress in your local districts.  This provides a unique opportunity to bring to their attention issues of concern regarding U.S.-Ukraine relations and relevant factors of U.S. security interests in the Central and East European region.  Below please find a checklist of questions and concerns to raise with your elected official.  Please use the checklist to engage in a discussion with your official and request a written statement in support of our issues.

Thank you for your continued support and attention to this important matter.  Should you have any further questions or comments, please feel free to contact the UCCA at 212 228-6840 or UNIS at 202 547-0018 at your convenience.

In addition, please note the following information regarding commemoration of the 25th anniversary of Ukrainian Independence Day in Congress will be commemorated on Thursday, September 15, 2016.  The event will feature an evening reception with remarks by Members of Congress, presentation of awards, as well as a "Ukrainian Day" advocacy event during the day.  Additional details will be forthcoming.

UCCA Honors 20th Anniversary of Ukraine’s Constitution

New York, NY (UCCA) – This Tuesday, June 28, marks 20 years since Independent Ukraine’s democratically elected Members of Parliament, working late into the night, delivered on the promise of drafting and ratifying a new Constitution. Of the many countries experiencing independence for the first time in decades, Ukraine took the longest to ratify its Constitution. Perhaps signifying its international importance on the world stage, agreements for Ukraine to cooperate militarily with NATO and the renouncement of its nuclear weapons were ratified before Ukraine took to finalizing its national system of law.
