SAVE THE DATE “UKRAINIAN DAYS” – AN ADVOCACY EVENT TO BRIEF CONGRESS ON ASSISTANCE TO UKRAINE

Друк PDF
Washington, DC (UNIS) - The Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA) and its Washington,
DC public relations bureau, the Ukrainian National Information Service (UNIS), will sponsor the first in-aseries
of advocacy events in our nation’s capital this year, entitled “Ukrainian Days.” On Wednesday,
March 4-5, 2015, the Ukrainian community will have an opportunity to express their concerns to
Members of Congress and encourage them to continue promoting and supporting a strong and effective
U.S. foreign policy towards Ukraine.
After successful advocacy of Ukrainian issues in last year’s Congress, this “Ukrainian Days” series will be
of utmost importance as a follow-up to the Ukraine Freedom Support Act signed into law in December
2014. Given the overwhelming support that Ukraine received last year, this late-winter advocacy event
will reinforce Ukraine’s immediate security concerns of preserving its territorial integrity and
sovereignty, maintaining border security, safeguarding its independence, and continuing economic
reform. It is critical that our community actively demonstrate its interest in these crucial matters.
The two-day advocacy program is supported by the Central and East European Coalition (CEEC). As a
founding member of the CEEC, the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America works in tandem with the
CEEC to advance U.S. foreign policy issues in Central and East Europe. A briefing session with Ukraine
experts will be held on Wednesday morning, March 4th to acquaint the participants with latest
information from Ukraine, as well as to review the advocacy issues. On Thursday morning March 5th, a
breakfast meeting will be held with members of the Congressional Ukrainian Caucus. Additional planned
events include a tribute to Taras Shevchenko at the newly-renovated Shevchenko Memorial and a debriefing
session on Thursday afternoon.
Founded by the UCCA during the height of the Cold War in 1977, UNIS has been instrumental in
advocating the community’s concerns for almost four decades. Its unwavering commitment in bringing
about independence for Ukraine and, since 1991 enhancing the bilateral relations between Ukraine and
the United States, has earned it much respect throughout Washington, DC.
SAVE THE DATE: March 4-5, 2015! Join us in advancing our community’s concerns in our nation’s
capital. Further information will be forthcoming on the UNIS Facebook page and the UCCA website
at www.ucca.org

Urge Secretary Kerry to Condemn Russia and Support Nadiya Savchenko

Друк PDF

From: The Honorable Bill Pascrell, Jr.
Date: 1/20/2015

Deadline: Thursday, January 22

Current Signers: Sander Levin

Dear Colleague,

In advance of Global Free Nadiya Savchenko Day on January 26th, please join me in urging Secratry Kerry to intensify his public condemnation of Nadiya Savchenko’s illegal imprisonment by Russia.

It has been over seven months since Nadiya Savchenko, a former Ukrainian Air Force pilot, Iraq War Veteran, Member of Ukraine’s Parliament and delegate to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, was captured by Russian-backed militia in southeastern Ukraine and brought to Russia. Since being transnationaly abducted, Savchenko has been accused of helping kill two Russian journalists and held in isolation while she awaits her day in Russian court, which has been delayed.

As a result of the delay, Savchenko has been on a hunger strike for over a month while in Russian prison. These actions are a clear violation of her human rights and international standards according to clause 5 of the September 5, 2014 Minsk Protocol, which called for the immediate release of all unlawfully detained persons.

Savchenko has become a rallying point in the Ukrainian community and deserves our support. If you have any questions or you would like to sign on, please contact Dylan Sodaro in my office at 5-5751 or  Ця електронна адреса захищена від спам-ботів, Вам потрібно включити JavaScript для перегляду by COB Thursday, January 22.

Rep. Bill Pascrell, Jr.

Member of Congress

Letter Text

Dear Secretary Kerry,

We write to urge you to strongly condemn Russia’s transnational abduction and the subsequent unlawful detention of Nadiya Savchenko, former Ukrainian Air Force pilot, Iraq War Veteran, Member of Ukraine’s Parliament and delegate to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, and do everything in your power to secure her immediate release.

On June 18, 2014, Ms. Savchenko was captured by pro-Russian militants in eastern Ukraine while carrying out her duty to defend her country. Eventually, she was transported to Russia, illegally detained under unsubstantiated charges, subjected to numerous interrogations by Russian authorities and denied access to her counsel. These actions are a clear violation of her human rights and international standards according to clause 5 of the September 5, 2014 Minsk Protocol, which called for the immediate release of all unlawfully detained persons. Subsequent to Russia’s actions and the decision to extend her arrest, Ms. Savchenko entered a hunger strike. We are deeply concerned for Ms. Savchenko’ health and wellbeing, as she is in solitary confinement and has been denied urgently-needed medical attention and communication with her legal counsel.

Russia’s actions betray their previous commitments and have derailed good faith efforts to de-escalate the crisis in Ukraine. It is imperative you utilize all diplomatic efforts to ensure the safety of Ms. Savchenko’s life and other illegally imprisoned Ukrainians immediate release. We respectfully urge you to intensify your public condemnation of her illegal imprisonment by Russia, and demand that she and the other illegally imprisoned Ukrainians be freed.

Sincerely,

Friends of 37th Zaporizhsky Territorial Volunteer Battalion Adopted by Washington, DC Region

Washington, DC – A local group of community activists recently met to discuss the current crisis in Ukraine and how the Washington, DC area can directly assist the war effort.  One of our community members, Dr. Vitalij Garber, who has extensive defense and military experience, was an international election observer under the auspices of Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA) during the recent Ukrainian elections.  Dr. Garber was assigned to the Zaporizhska Oblast and in the process had an opportunity to get acquainted with the region and in particular the newly formed 37th Zaporizhsky Territorial Volunteer Battalion.  That centrally-located oblast reaches down to the Sea of Azov and sits astride of the next likely Russian invasion route on its way to grab a land corridor to Crimea.
