UCCA: Russia’s Actions In Ukraine Are War Crimes

Russia’s continuous targeting of children’s hospitals, maternity wards, civilian population centers, not to mention the firing upon of negotiated humanitarian evacuation corridors, are heinous atrocities that constitute war crimes committed against the Ukrainian nation. This inhuman siege, which has been repeated against cities, towns and villages throughout Ukraine, is a Genocide being actively committed against the Ukrainian people.

The Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA), the umbrella organization that represents the interests of nearly 2 million Americans of Ukrainian descent, once again implores the United States and our NATO allies to provide with all due haste to Ukraine, the anti-aircraft and anti-missile defense systems that are urgently needed to protect the skies above innocent men, women, and children. These armaments could immediately begin defending civilian targets from Russian missiles attacks and airstrikes being launched from positions within Ukraine, from within the Russian Federation and from Russian warships in the Black Sea.

As Ukrainians continue to die day after day from Russian missiles, bombs and gunfire, we continue to hear that a “No Fly Zone” is too risky, that transferring fighter jets from Eastern European countries to Ukraine’s Air Force would be too dangerous. It is unacceptable to cling to the position that the world can’t do anything more to help Ukraine because it might instigate a hypothetical third World War, while at the same time we are all witnessing Ukraine fight a war.

Even so, Ukrainians will continue to stand on the front lines of democracy, defending all of Europe from Russia’s advancing tyranny. As President Zelenskyy of Ukraine himself quoted Winston Churchill in his address to the British House of Commons earlier this week:

“We will fight to the end in the sea, in the air. We will fight for our land, whatever the costs. We will fight in the forests, in the fields, on the shores, in the streets.”

If the United States and our NATO allies don’t help Ukraine end this barbaric bombing of civilians today, tomorrow we will have no choice but to defend democracy ourselves. To quote Winston Churchill again, we remind NATO leaders of what he said about the United Kingdom’s response to the invasion of Poland in 1939:

“The government had to choose between war and shame. They chose shame. They will get war too.”

Dear Mr. President:

OR

Dear Senator/Representative (name):

As an American of Ukrainian descent, I am enraged by the recent indiscriminate killing of civilians throughout Ukraine by Russian missiles. While grateful for much-needed military support from the United States, Ukraine’s air defenses need to be augmented to protect the slaughter of innocent civilians. As a result of the Kremlin’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, that country is experiencing a humanitarian catastrophe of unprecedented proportions.

The facilitation of significant air defense assets to Ukraine, including surface-to-air missiles, fighter jets, and instituting a no-fly-zone are critical components to provide the Ukrainians the means to defend its civilian population and push back the Russian invaders. Your support and promotion of enhanced air defenses for Ukraine will ensure greater protection for Ukraine’s citizens and establish safe corridors for humanitarian assistance.

The Kremlin’s invasion of Ukraine has negated the worldwide rules-based order that has been in place since World War II. I strongly encourage your support and promotion for the United States to enhance air defense systems for Ukraine, the strategic partner of the United States.

Sincerely,

Thanks to generous individual and corporate donations, UCCA has begun distributing vital aid through our partners on the ground and preparing additional humanitarian aid deliveries.

Please know that every penny donated to this Fundraiser will go directly to our humanitarian aid effort - NO money is being diverted at the top or dedicated for administrative overhead.
